Saw this on a recent hike at the Urbanik Preserve and have seen it on all the blazes at the Mary Edwards Mountain Property. My first thought was an obsessive bird, but seems likely that it is squirrels?

That’s pretty funny I’ve never seen something like that before. I like to look out for the I guess you’d call it land ownership association plaques that tell you who’s managing the property. That’s a good one though. I’d have to guess the same as you some rather overactive rodent that didn’t want it there?
